About Us

Raise cottage is situated on the summit of Dunmail Raise, close to Raise Beck. This stunning location provides superb mountain views and immediate access to the mountains for walkers and other outdoor enthusiasts. Nestling on the slopes of Seat Sandal, it is a prime location to explore the Central Fells, probably the best location for your ascent of Helvellyn.

Family-run, we offer bed and breakfast accommodation for individuals and couples.

The accommodation comprises of five double bedrooms, two of which are en-suite, two with have log burning stoves, most of the rooms have freesat TV’s. All five double bedrooms have views of the surrounding fells, three of the rooms face south with views to Grasmere and the lake.

We are on the main bus route from Windermere Railway Station to Keswick. It is the 555. There is a regular service and the bus stops outside. Car parking is on the adjacent lay-by.

Welcoming all, Raise Cottage is run by Philip Harrison.

Philip is a retired police officer, having spent most of his career in the Underwater Search Unit, he would describe himself as competent swimmer. He completed The Two Way Windermere Open Swimming Championship with a time of 11 hours, 18 minutes and 53 seconds – as well as several one way swims in 5 hours. Philip is also a keen cyclist and time trialist. However, his true love is the hills of Lakeland and especially Grasmere, where he can be found swimming in the tarns at Langdale, Grisedale, Stickle, and his favourite (Butter Crag).He has recently taken up rowing and has joined Windermere rowing club base at Fell Foot at the South end of Windermere.

Terms and Conditions

No Smoking
All buildings and grounds are strictly no smoking areas.

Checking in
Check in time is from 4.30pm. Checkout time is 10.30am. Bags and rucksacks may be left at Raise Cottage during these times but the facilities will be closed.

Stout footwear is required to access Raise Cottage as it is situated on the fell side, also ensure that you have suitable clothing if walking on the fells.

A valid form of identification, i.e. Passport, driving licence, is required when you check in.

 

Private Double Rooms with En Suite.
We now have two luxury private double rooms with en suite facilities. These rooms have only just been completed in June 2016.

Food
The dining room will only accommodate 14 persons at any one time.

Tea, coffee, milk, cereal, toast are included in the price of your stay.

There are ample facilities in the village of Grasmere for evening meals. A small number can be catered for at Raise Cottage by prior arrangement.

Bookings and Refunds
When booking direct payment is required in full. Please give us a full 7 days notice if you wish to cancel and we will refund your payment. Less than 7 days notice will result in a nil refund unless we manage to let your room.

If you do not turn up and have made no attempt to contact us then no consideration for a refund will be given.

Dogs
Dogs by prior arrangement only and small dogs only please.

We are dog friendly but cannot accommodate more than two Labrador type / size dogs. A charge of £5 per night is payable in cash on arrival. Dog blankets and 2 dog beds are available. Dogs must be kept under control and not exercised near to the water supply. It is expected that they will be kept under close control.

Consideration should be given to other guests at all times. There should be no
noise that disturbs other residents after 11pm and before 6am.
